BIO:
Celine Cannon is a Sculptor from Ireland based in New York, working primarily in stone and fibre. She apprenticed at her family’s quarry in Dublin where the ancient techniques were passed down through the generations.
As a contracted artist, Celine has carved architectural details for several building facades throughout New York, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, Columbia University - Butler library, the Jewish Museum, Fifth Avenue and the Verizon Building Restoration - ground zero.
She was amongst a select few artists invited by Donna Karan, in partnership with the Clinton Global Initiative, to work on a Philanthropic Art Project in Haiti.
Celine has exhibited in both New York and California and her work is held in private collections as far reaching as Singapore and the UAE.
Her work has been published internationally.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
“My works in stone are a response to my environment, my relationships with people, places and things. Contained within a geometric form, clean lines, acute angles and varying planes signify dimensions of thought and lend structure to concepts, while space, volume, proportion and texture, represent depth of emotion”.
FIBRE ARTS:
Celine was tutored in the SAORI weaving technique - a contemporary Japanese freestyle handweaving method that “emphasizes individuality, self-expression and the acceptance of imperfection”. Her textiles explore the use of fibers in a raw, refined and textural way. Yarn is manipulated through various hand spinning techniques and then hand woven.
Influenced by the intricacies of landscapes - their ecological processes, physical characteristics and human interaction, her weavings of undulating plains are topographical compositions, characterized by the use of different yarn gauges and textures.
